The Division of Rheumatology offers a two year fellowship, with an optional third year, that includes all aspects of clinical, laboratory, imaging, investigational, and pathological approaches to rheumatic diseases. In addition, our fellows are expected to perform research activities under the guidance of a mentor and produce a minimum of a published peer-reviewed manuscript representing an original collection of data.
The first year is primarily clinical including both in-patient and out-patient experiences in continuity clinics. Our teaching venues include Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, an 800 bed tertiary care free-standing private non-profit academic medical center, West Los Angeles VA Medical Center outpatient clinics, UCLA-Harbor General Hospital (large county tertiary care center) outpatient clinics, and additional clinics at Los Angeles Free and Venice Family Clinics. An optional clinical experience is available at Children's Hospital-Los Angeles. The second year is primarily research oriented with electives, providing broad experiences in clinical research investigating outcomes and risk for rheumatic diseases. Concurrent clinical exposure to imaging, pathology, rehabilitation, orthopedics, and laboratory medicine is provided. The teaching experience takes advantage of the sheer size, volume, and diversity of patients referred to our Medical Center, situated in the heart of Los Angeles.
Our teaching program involves weekly conferences that include Grand Rounds, Journal Clubs, Research conferences, Clinical Case conferences, Imaging conference, and Orthopedic teaching rounds. Fellows are strongly encouraged to attend the UCLA didactic weekly conferences as well as the ACR slide review sessions at UCLA.
