Preventive and Wellness Screenings

Imaging for Early Disease Detection & Prevention

A variety of imaging tests are available for the asymptomatic patient at risk. However, these tests are not yet reimbursed by Medicare or many insurance companies. They require payment in full at the time of the procedure. Some of the tests can be requested directly by the patient, while others require a doctor's prescription.

Exams for Early Detection

No physician referral needed:

  • CT Coronary Calcium Scan - Detects and measures coronary arterial calcium (atherosclerosis), an early indicator of disease in the coronary arteries

Physician name and address required (results will be sent to this physician):

  • Lung Screening (CT) - Can detect lung cancer and other abnormalities of the lungs, including emphysema before it can be detected by lung function tests.

Physician referrals needed:

  • Screening Carotid Ultrasound - Identifies blood flow blockages to the brain (stroke risk).
  • Screening Abdominal Aortic Ultrasound - For detection of aortic aneurysms.
  • CT Coronary Angiogram - Earliest detection of plaque in coronary arteries.
  • "Micro-Dose" Coronary CT Angiography (CCTA) - Asses coronary stenosis as well as the extent of non-calcified ("soft") plaque and calcified plaque. A simplified CCTA with reduced radiation and reduced cost.
  • CT Colonography - An alternative to colonoscopy for detection of colon cancer.
  • Whole Body CT - Can detect cancer and other abnormalities in the chest (lungs, aorta and heart), abdomen (liver, kidneys, pancreas, gall bladder, abdominal aorta, adrenal glands, lymph nodes and spleen) and pelvis (bladder, prostate, ovaries and uterus) as well as skeletal problems.
  • Cerebral Aneurysm Screening (Brain MRI/MRA) - Early detection of brain abnormalities including tumors, aneurysms and possibly predicting stroke or dementia.
  • MRI Abdominal/Pelvic - An exam of the abdominal and pelvic regions.
  • Bone Density - Detects osteoporosis that can lead to fractures.
